About Us

Achievement Beyond Obstacles (ABO) is a scholarship program sponsored and managed by Rotary Clubs in northern Nevada is dedicated to bringing opportunities for higher education to students often overlooked by other scholarships. Counselors from more than 20 high schools in Washoe County, including charter and private high schools, nominate one or more students for this program.

These students who have overcome major obstacles in their lives will be continuing their education even though any do not qualify for other scholarships which are based upon grades or school participation.

We give deserving students a change to excel in life by believing in them when others did not.

Why Consider ABO?We want every student who is ready to have the opportunity to engage in higher learning without the sole consideration being grades or school activity participation

Once nominated, students will attend an in-person Leadership Weekend designed to equip them with new skills to succeed in school and in life. In addition, they can attend a virtual College Financial Workshop, where Rotarians and staff at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) help them with complicated forms that are often a barrier to their obtaining additional assistance, learn about the actual costs of college and trade schools, and are given information and exercises about how to plan and budget.

The Program has an in-person Mentoring Component, which uses the Dean’s Future Scholars program at UNR and TMCC. Activities in this portion of the ABO Program include meeting with successful college students and ABO alumni on the UNR campus.  We also hold a virtual Effective Communications Workshop. We have learned from our students that this is an area where they need to develop confidence.

Students who complete the Leadership Weekend have an opportunity to share their experiences and future plans with a local Rotary Club.  Each student who takes part in this opportunity will receive a $100 award.

Students who attend Leadership Weekend and share with the Rotary club give an application for a scholarship –they range from $1,000 to $3,500. In addition, we encourage students to apply for scholarships in future years. Scholarships we have have provided in the past:
